FIDDLESTICKS FAMILY SERIES GOES WILD WITH “CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS”

PITTSBURGH – Go wild with Fiddlesticks, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s feline musical ambassador, during the “Carnival of the Animals” on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Heinz Hall for the season’s second concert of the Fiddlesticks Family Series Presented by Macys.

“The Carnival of the Animals” is one of the most famous pieces by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Each of the movements in this spectacular orchestral work depicts a different animal, from the royal lion to the graceful swan. Joining conductor Lawrence Loh, vocalist Katy Williams and Fiddlesticks onstage is cartoon artist Joe Wos from the Toonseum, who will illustrate the animals as the symphony performs. Dancers from the Point Park University Ballet and the Pittsburgh Symphony’s assistant conductor, Fawzi Haimor, will also join in the fun. Let your imagination run wild in this musical journey through the animal kingdom.

Attendees are invited to participate in Discovery Time Adventures prior to every Fiddlesticks concerts. These educational activities allow young audiences and their parents to meet symphony musicians, learn songs and take part in various musical activities. Discovery Time Adventures for the “Carnival of the Animals” program will include many activities, such as sing-along time with Larry and Katy, animal-themed arts and crafts, music and movement dancing, a symphony quartet, and even a special visit from a few Pittsburgh Zoo animals!

Discovery Time Adventures will begin at 10 a.m. and the concert will begin at 11:15 a.m. Tickets, ranging in price from $12 to $22.25, can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412-392-4900 or by visiting pittsburghsymphony.org.

Resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, Lawrence Loh is one of the most exciting young talents on the classical music scene today.  He was brought to national attention in February 2004, when he substituted last-minute for an ailing Charles Dutoit with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Conducting Stravinsky’s Petrouchka and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Loh received enthusiastic acclaim from orchestra players, audience members and critics, alike. Since his appointment as music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic in 2005, the orchestra has flourished artistically, defining its reputation as one of the finest regional orchestras in the country. His leadership has attracted such artists as André Watts, Anne Akiko Meyers, Jon Nakamatsu, Zuill Bailey and Sharon Isbin.

Katy Williams has performed extensively in the Pittsburgh area with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Opera, Mendelssohn Choir, Pittsburgh Opera Theater, River City Brass Band and Pittsburgh Concert Chorale. She was a featured soloist for several Pittsburgh Symphony Holiday Pops concert series and made her BNY Mellon Grand Classics debut in September 2005 with Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She was a soloist in the Heinz Hall performance of The Lord of the Rings and has been the special guest vocalist for many of the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Fiddlesticks and Tiny Tots children’s concerts.

Introducing CrawlAfterDark at participating venues beginning at 9 p.m.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the line-up for its winter Gallery Crawl that takes place Friday, January 24, 2014, from 5:30–9 p.m. The crawl showcases a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Live bands, DJs, dance, comedy, and participatory activities are also part of the complimentary crawl events.
 

2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District. To mark this special occasion, the Trust is introducing CrawlAfterDark, which features select venues with additional events beginning at 9 p.m. Each of the CrawlAfterDark activities requires admission, ranging from $5–$15.

“We are pleased to introduce CrawlAfterDark, extending hours for certain Cultural District venues participating in the Gallery Crawl and promoting the District as a late-night destination,” says Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement and Director of Jazz Programs for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “CrawlAfterDark highlights the transformation of the Cultural District, promoting numerous options for late night entertainment, from comedy, music, theatre, clubs, dining, and more.”

Although German Dada artist Hannah Höch was active half a world away as the Radium Girls were painting watch dials, Höch was creating rebellious collages that pointed out the stark difference between reality and the media’s projected images of women. To celebrate her work, visitors are invited to “Make Your Own Radium Girl” using Hannah Höch’s collage method and materials provided.

Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the upcoming Gallery Crawl to take place Friday, April 26, 2013, from 5:30-9:00 p.m., in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more. Everything from the traditional to the avant garde is on display for art lovers of all ages.

“There are 36 stops in locations throughout the Cultural District, filled with new exhibits, exciting performances and interesting activities to enjoy. Keep the fun going and stay after the Crawl for free Salsa Friday at Cabaret Theater Square,” comments Darcy Kucenic, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust-Manager of Education and Operations.   To name just a few of the highlights: Memento Mori in Tito & Exchange Way; Community Supported Art, a preview of the new series from the New Hazlett Theater at 937 Liberty Avenue; craft making-origami magnolias with Office of Public Art at Magnolias for Pittsburgh, 7thStreet & Penn Avenue; and Pittsburgh Public Schools All-City Visual Arts and Music Showcase at the Trust Arts Education Center and August Wilson Center.  Night Market IV, sponsored by Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, at the 8th Street & Penn Avenue Parking Lot, will offer food, art vendors, music and dance.

Oscar-nominated animator Bill Plympton to present screening, workshop at Point Park University this month

Public invited to attend March 15 screening, March 16 master class workshop

PITTSBURGH – Point Park University’s Cinema Department and The Toonseum will present Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton for a screening of his animated short films, as well as a workshop and lecture this month.

These events are open to the general public.

Plympton will screen some of his animated short films at 8 p.m., Friday, March 15, at the Point Park University Center’s GRW Theater, 414 Wood St., downtown. General admission is $5. Point Park students, staff and faculty will be admitted free with valid I.D.

Plympton will hold a workshop at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 16, at the GRW Theater. During the workshop, Plympton will discuss and demonstrate his work. Tickets are $25 general admission, $15 for general student admission and ToonSeum members. The event is free for Point Park students with valid I.D. All workshop attendees will receive a drawing by Plympton.

Plympton has created more than 20 animated short films and five animated features, and was nominated for Academy Awards for his short films, Guard Dog (2004) and Your Face (1987). His illustrations and cartoons have been published in The New York Times, Vogue, Rolling Stone,Vanity Fair, and National Lampoon. His shorts and rock videos have shown regularly on MTV.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the upcoming Gallery Crawl to take place Friday, January 25, 2013, from 5:30-9:00 p.m., in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more. Everything from the traditional to the avant garde is on display for art lovers of all ages.

The evening will kick off with Miguel Chevalier’s Power Pixels, two self-generative video installations located in Wood Street Galleries. Chevalier is an internationally known artist and an innovator of digital arts whose work is sure to excite the masses. The night will also mark the premiere of the Arcade Comedy Theater at 811 Liberty Avenue. The comedy club will feature improvisation jams and comedy performances within a newly renovated 60-seat performance space. In addition, the Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra (E.L.C.O.) will play music in the Trust Arts Education Center from Beck’s brand-new only-available-as-sheet-music album,Song Reader, along with their energetic and contemporary sound. This is the first time the E.L.C.O. will be performing at the Gallery Crawl.

“We are excited to present our interpretation of the music,” said Heidi Matthews, Co-founder and Operations Director of E.L.C.O. “The E.L.C.O. does a great job at presenting a fresh perspective to older songs and giving a new twist to pop pieces.”
