(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope is proud to announce its 2014-15 Roots Cellar Concerts Series, featuring the best in acoustic music, from legends of American music to up-and-coming artists who are making a mark on the genre.

Held in the acoustically-sound subterranean room at The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, The Roots Cellar presents a unique and intimate atmosphere for an up-close experience with the best folk musicians the world has to offer.

The club-like environment allows for high-top or low-top tables situated around the room, or take a seat in one of the couches placed throughout. Wine, beer and soda are available for purchase from the bar (proceeds benefit the PCA).

Del Rey started playing guitar when she was four. At the age of fourteen she was introduced to the world of traditional acoustic music. Lou Curtiss, proprietor of Folk Arts Rare Records and artistic director of the San Diego Folk Festival introduced her to living artists like Sam Chatmon, Lydia Mendoza and Howard Armstrong, and to recordings, especially those of the great blues guitarist Memphis Minnie. Her guitar playing is influenced by country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie-all filtered through the sensibility of an autodidact trailor-park aesthete.

Thirty years later, when Del Rey became fascinated with the ukulele, she tried to play the same kind of complicated rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as she does on six. She expects a lot out of the little instrument, and usually gets it. She takes the ukulele “ to a new level of musicianship.” (John Book)
Her live show is full of complex grooves and sly humor. “Virtuosic in just the right way, which is to say, in order to realize a musical idea. A very nice unlikely blend of things, accessible, slightly nostalgic, but fresh and thoughtful. ” (CD Baby review, “At The Ukeshack #1)

Del Rey plays solo concerts worldwide and also presents a concert/lecture on women musicians called Women in American Music. She collaborates and tours frequently with Austin guitarist Steve James and with fiddler Suzy Thompson. She has contributed to projects in honor of The Mississippi Sheiks, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Johnny Cash. Del Rey has written about music for various publications, including Acoustic Guitar.

Her latest solo album, Four and Six came out in April 2012. She has recorded five solo albums, Blue Uke (Hobemian 2008), When The Levee Breaks (Hobemian 2006), X-Rey Guitar (Hobemian 2000), Hot Sauce (Hobemian 1995) and Boogie Mysterioso (Hobemian 1993). In 2003 she released a collection of performances Del Rey:Live.

Del Rey recorded Hen Party with Suzy Thompson (Hobemian 2010) and the first project of 2011 was a 45rpm record, the proceeds of which benefit Transportation Choices Coalition.She recorded an album of uke ‘n’ bass instrumental duets with Matt Weiner At The Ukeshack #1(Hobemian 2007) and also on uke with The Yes Yes Boys she recorded Why Say No? (Hobemian 2002) With Steve James, Tonight (Hobemian 2004) andTwins (Hobemian 2002). With Del Rey and the Blues Gators she recorded Chartruese (Hobemian 1991) and Cafe Society (Kicking Mule 1985).

Grammy Award winner Mollie O'Brien became known to the rest of the world as a singer's singer when, in 1988, she and her brother Tim released the first of three critically-acclaimed albums for Sugar Hill Records (Take Me Back, Remember Me and Away Out On The Mountain). Eventually, Mollie recorded five equally well-received solo albums (Tell It True, Big Red Sun and Things I Gave Away for Sugar Hill Records, and I Never Move Too Soon and Everynight In The Week for Resounding Records). Additionally, she was a regular on the nationally-syndicated radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion” from 2001 through 2005. She's long been known as a singer who doesn't recognize a lot of musical boundaries, and audiences love her fluid ability to make herself at home in any genre while never sacrificing the essence of the song she tackles. O’Brien has primarily focused her efforts on the fading art of interpretation and the end result is a singer at the very top of her game who is not afraid to take risks both vocally and in the material she chooses.

Husband Rich Moore has busied himself in the Colorado music scene for many years. While staying home with the kids when Mollie & Tim toured, he held a day job and continued to perform locally with a variety of Colorado favorites, including Pete Wernick and Celeste Krenz. Not only is Moore known to produce some of the funniest onstage running commentary, he's also a powerhouse guitar player who can keep up with O'Brien's twists and turns from blues to traditional folk to jazz to rock and roll. He creates a band with just his guitar and, as a result, theirs is an equal partnership.

O’Brien and Moore’s first duet CD, a live recording titled 900 Baseline (Remington Road Records) was released in 2006. Their first studio project, Saints & Sinners (Remington Road Records), was released to nationwide acclaim in 2010. In January 2014 they'll release their followup, Love Runner (Remington Road Records). Both studio projects were produced by Lyons, CO ace arranger and bassist, Eric Thorin, who often joins them onstage for their live shows. All three CDs showcase their talent for unlocking the secrets to a diverse array of songs in authoritative yet very fun and unusual arrangements.

Most of the tracks on Love Runner have to do with the universal theme of home: leaving it and family behind; missing it; never wanting to go back; finding it in surprising places all over the world; wondering what kind of “home” awaits us in the life after this one. O’Brien and Moore let us know via their choice of material that they are not afraid to take risks. It’s almost as if they’re telling us that at this stage in their lives, they are at home with their musical selves - they can do whatever they want and they don’t care if the rest of the world agrees with them. 

To quote the one and only Cher, "In this business, it takes time to be really good." Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore are proof that age is no obstacle to making timeless, original and inventive music.

Musicians routinely find their audiences while playing out on the local music scene. But there’s another layer of song not bound my commercial considerations, created by amateur and semi-pro songwriters who rarely play out.

Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle will release a 25-song compilation album of songs written by non-professional group members at a CD release event.

Working under the auspices of Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society, the Songwriters Circle conducts a weekly songwriters’ open stage at Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, holds monthly meetings focused on songcraft, places songwriters in front of audiences and produces this annual compilation album series -- now in its ninth year -- to help to nurture regional songwriters and foster community among artists who are compelled to write songs. Since the project started in 2005, 80 local songwriters have participated in this album series.

Christopher Mark Jones’ long musical itinerary includes busking in Paris, the English folk club circuit, tours of Denmark and Holland, the Bristol and Rotterdam festivals, BBC and Capitol radio appearances in London, electric clubs in Boston and showcase clubs, house concerts and coffeehouses in Pittsburgh. His 1978 album for Transatlantic No More Range to Roam was released in five countries and distributed in the U.S. by Rounder. With so many guitarists trying to make their mark these days, it’s not easy being a “trailblazer.” Yet, that perfectly defines Tim Farrell.  His fingerstyle playing and original compositions display an elegant simplicity that celebrates the purity of the acoustic guitar. Tim is a rare kind of musician, with the ability to both entertain an audience and inspire future generations of players.

 As a performer, composer and educator, Tim entertains audiences internationally. He maintains an active performing schedule, appearing in a variety of concert venues such as the Kimmel Center, Montreal Guitar Show, Carnegie Center, Hard Rock Live and many more. Tim performs as a solo artist and also has shared the stage with such notable artists as Les Paul, George Benson, Jean Luc Ponty, Rick Wakeman, Alex DeGrassi, Jake Shimabukuru, California Guitar Trio and many more. Christopher Mark Jones’ long musical itinerary includes busking in Paris, the English folk club circuit, tours of Denmark and Holland, the Bristol and Rotterdam festivals, BBC and Capitol radio appearances in London, electric clubs in Boston and showcase clubs, house concerts and coffeehouses in Pittsburgh. His 1978 album for Transatlantic was No More Range to Roam, released in five countries and distributed in the U.S. by Rounder. After forays into rock, jazz and swing, and time off to raise two sons, 2010’s Heartland Variations marked a return to the soulful country and blues-inflected Americana narratives of the first recording. The dozen new songs of Suburban 2-Step were released in April, 2012 and have found favor with folk DJs nationally and internationally.

The Honey Dewdrops are the Virginia-based roots duet of Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish. With a blend of new Americana and traditional folk music, they create inspired songs that are rooted in the experience and lives of people. Their sound is transcendent; they write all their own songs and yet no one could ever peg them as just another singer-songwriter couple, not when they’ve embedded a sparse Appalachian clarity on every track that is accessible to listeners everywhere. The songs they write shine with energy and emotion through intimate performances with a handful of acoustic instruments and tightly layered harmonies.

On stage, the Honey Dewdrops focus on dynamically blending the sounds of instruments and voices by singing and playing into a single microphone. There is a high lonesome quality to the way their voices blend that is familiar, yet the mixture is unique. Their music covers the ground between hand crafted folk songs, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and a cappella spirituals. In their own way, the duo fills up a room with sound and feeling that lingers long after the show is over.

Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle is releasing its annual compilation album – a collection of songs written and performed by amateur and semi-pro songwriters from Pittsburgh and throughout Southwest Pennsylvania. The collection is a two-disc showcase of songs by local songwriters from middle school age through retirement, blue collar and white collar, men and women from throughout the region who share a love of writing songs.

Produced by Doug Wilkin of Wilkin Audio in Regent Square, the album series gives amateur and semi-pro songwriters an inexpensive, nurturing experience in a professional recording studio, and is intended to serve as a springboard to the songwriters’ independent recording. Since the project’s debut in 2005, the series has showcased the work of over 80 individual Pittsburgh amateur songwriters.

John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector’s edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John’s greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio.

Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown and has appeared on CNN. His new song “Where No Monuments Stand” is featured in the upcoming documentary Every War Has Two Losers, about activist and Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford (1914-1993).

REM/Smithereens/Red Clay Ramblers producer Don Dixon “discovered” Hey Mavis when they were featured on a 2009 Christmas compilation. Four months later, Dixon produced their debut CD, Red Wine. The CD immediately climbed the national Folk DJ-L radio charts, peaking at #5 for overall artist while the songs Red Light and Red Wine peaked at #5 and #9. The CD finished the year at #13in Folk Alley’s "Top CD's of 2010" alongside new releases by Tim O’Brien, Peter Rowan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Chieftains, and Bob Dylan.

In an ever expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar, lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass, vocals) personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition.

Although initially staying fairly close to a traditional repertoire, the Kruger Brothers later turned to song writing and composition in order to draw more closely from their personal experiences. The result is a catalog of songs and music distinguished by its rich detail and an insight into the delicacy and complexity of everyday life. The honesty of their writing has become a hallmark of the trio’s work. Another is the banjo playing and composition of Jens Kruger. Del Rey plays solo concerts worldwide and also presents a concert/lecture on women musicians called Women in American Music. She collaborates and tours frequently with Austin guitarist Steve James and with fiddler Suzy Thompson. Her latest solo album, Four and Six came out in April 2012. She has recorded five solo albums, Blue Uke (Hobemian 2008), When The Levee Breaks (Hobemian 2006), X-Rey Guitar (Hobemian 2000), Hot Sauce (Hobemian 1995) and Boogie Mysterioso (Hobemian 1993). In 2003 she released a collection of performances Del Rey: Live. Her guitar playing is influenced by country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie-all filtered through the sensibility of an autodidact trailer-park aesthete. Common Threads is a talented ensemble of singers, songwriters and musicians well known to the Pittsburgh folk music scene for three decades. Known for their creative renditions of old, new and original folk music with signature harmonies and unique arrangements, CT breathes new life into the great American folk tradition. Initially formed in 1988, CT became an enduring 27 year partnership. Disbanded in 2006 following the death of dear friend and founding member D.C. Fitzgerald, the original members Bob Banerjee, Jan Boyd and Casey Deely have reunited with the exciting addition of Nathan Zoob, Dave Pellow, Bryan Rubican and special guest, Eric George.

Founded in 1976, Calliope is a non-profit music organization that organizes and administers a variety of concert series, a folk music school, and educational outreach programs. As the premier promoter of roots music in southwestern Pennsylvania, Calliope’s mission is to promote and preserve traditional and contemporary heritage-based music and its allied arts. Calliope programs are supported in part by the A.W. Mellon Education and Charitable Trust Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, J. Robert Izod Memorial Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, The Allegheny County sales tax revenues awarded by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Heinz endowments, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, University of  Pittsburgh  Library System, and an anonymous donor.
