BRIDGEVILLE, PA (February 14, 2011) – Step back in time at Woodville Plantation as this living history museum explores the lives of the upper class in the 18th century. On Sunday, February 27, 2011, guests are invited to “drop in” on the Neville family and their friends as they go about their daily routine at Woodville Plantation.

Visitors will learn how the 18th century gentry spent their days and entertained. Living history re-enactors will demonstrate activities that would have occurred in the Neville household on a daily basis; such as games, sewing and dining at the period-correct hour of 2 pm.

Admission is $5.00 for Adults, $3.00 for Kids Age 6-12, Free for Kids Under 6


The site will be open for special extended hours from noon until 5 pm during this event.

Woodville Plantation, the home of John and Presley Neville, is Western Pennsylvania’s link to the late 18th century. Built in 1775, this living history museum interprets life during the period of 1780-1820, the era of the New Republic. Guided tours of the house are available every Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s First Night® Pittsburgh 2011. During this momentous weekend of entertainment, the city will revel in a joyous celebration of the arts: dance, music, theater, comedy, magic, visual art and film, plus hands-on activities for children and adults.

First Night® Pittsburgh begins at 6 pm with the Dollar Bank Children’s Fireworks Display and performances by One World Tribe on the Dollar Bank Stage, followed by the First Niagara First Night® Parade at 8 pm. This year’s parade will have a “Winter Wonderland” theme with penguin puppets and Iceburgh as a programming thread to the Winter Classic. The evening concludes with a performance by Tower of Power and the First Night® tradition, The Countdown to Midnight and Future of Pittsburgh Grand Finale atop Penn Avenue Place. The Highmark Stage, where all the First Night® revelry concludes, is located on Penn Avenue next to Fifth Avenue Place. The newest venue is the former Bally’s Building, which will have half a dozen workshops and activities.

PITTSBURGH, PA: This Tuesday, the Trust will unveil a large-scale light project that artfully visualizes the electromagnetic field of an active mobile phone. With funding from The Fine Foundation, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust commissioned the Netherlands-based artist collective, Informationlab, to create Cell Phone Disco, the city’s first art+science interactive installation.

“The notion of ‘Lighting’ the Cultural District is in our current five-year strategic plan and also our upcoming three-year plan," says Murray Horne, curator of the Trust’s Wood Street Galleries. “Cell Phone Disco will serve as an anchor for other potential installations that will illuminate the pedestrian pathways throughout the District.”

Cell Phone Disco joins a list of other notable lighting installations curated by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Sign of Light (1999) designed by Robert Wilson and Richard Gluckman, Wall of Light (1999) by Robert Wilson and Flow (2004) by Erwin Redl.

In 2006, architect Ursula Lavrenčič and information designer Auke Touwslager created the first version of Cell Phone Disco, an installation which transforms a part of the electromagnetic spectrum into another frequency range - the range of visible light. Their fascination lies with the transmission quality of the mobile phone; its presence beyond the shell of the device.

Every single mobile phone transmits radio waves in order to connect to a network and everyday millions of people around the world are broadcasting their private conversations. Here we are witnessing a unique moment in history, when transmission is no longer exclusive domain of broadcasting companies. Mobile phone connectivity became just another layer of urban landscape and substantially changed the electromagnetic topography of the environment. Cell Phone Disco has been embraced by many art galleries and museums, but with the installation in Pittsburgh, it is finally positioned in the public space where it generates a glimpse at the dynamics of the omnipresent mobile phone traffic.

For this first outdoor, site-specific art installation of Cell Phone Disco, the intersection of Tito and Exchange ways was selected for its high-volume of pedestrian traffic and the very long sight line down Exchange Way. The artists note in a statement, “We find it very interesting that in this way you can observe from a great distance electromagnetic clouds that people passing by are (unintentionally) producing.”

In order to reach the sensitivity that corresponds the urban scale and situation, the artists and a team of engineers developed a concept where an advanced receiver continuously scans input from 16 antennas along the 16 by 16’ grid. The data of the electromagnetic radiation is fed to eight processors that are embedded in the digital display. The computed values at any given point are represented through 2,304 individually controlled LED lights. What was once invisible is now detectable through the visual senses:

“We wanted to present a visualization of the electromagnetic space and blend it with the physical environment. We have enveloped the display in a two-way mirror, so when there is cell phone activity in the vicinity the light cloud appears on the top of the reflected image of the alley. In this sense the installation is a fusion of the invisible digital reality represented by LEDs and the analog world as it appears in the mirror,” the artists note in an emailed statement.

“When people see the installation and make a phone call, after they are finished, they may see the phone no longer as an object in their hands but something that is larger, something part of a much bigger invisible architecture,” says Mr. Touwslager.

Ms. Lavrenčič adds, “I hope people will enjoy walking through the alley and that Cell Phone Disco will become a natural part of the alley. From an architectural perspective, it is very interesting to see how an intervention like Cell Phone Disco can change how people move through the city.”

Informationlab is a tag that identifies the collaborative efforts of an international group operating at the shifting intersection of art, science, technology & design. Since 2004 Informationlab founders Auke Touwslager (NL) and Ursula Lavrencic (SLO) seen their efforts being adopted by different fields and audiences. As a result their Cell Phone Disco (2006) concept found its way to an international art community and to museums and galleries around the world. Most of the group collaboration is based on curiosity driven research which subsequently lead to a variety of projects, exhibitions, workshops and lectures.

Jem Finer Opens Wood Street Galleries Exhibition with a World Premiere

London-based artist Finer presents a new performance based on his world-renowned 1,000-year-long composition “Longplayer.”

“Shortplayer” debuts with a performance at 9.30 p.m. Fri., Oct. 1, at Wood Street Galleries, after Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Gallery Crawl.

Pittsburgh, PA: Wood Street Galleries is proud to present the world premiere of “Shortplayer,” a new composition by renowned artist and composer Jem Finer. “Shortplayer” will be performed by Finer leading a group of Pittsburgh’s finest musicians at 9:30 p.m. Friday, October 1 at Wood Street Galleries, immediately following the Downtown Gallery Crawl. (“Shortplayer” concert admission is $10/$8 students.) The performance marks the Pittsburgh launch of Finer’s acclaimed artwork Longplayer, a 1,000-year-long composition that has played continuously since 1999, and which arrives in Pittsburgh as part of Wood Street Galleries’ sound-installation show, Audio Space (Oct. 1-Dec. 31, 2010).

The installation of Longplayer at Wood Street Galleries marks another first, as Pittsburgh joins a remarkable list of sites with Longplayer listening posts including the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England, and the Bibliotecha in Alexandria, Egypt. The Wood Street Galleries installation will be the first listening post anywhere between San Francisco and London.

About Longplayer

Created with London-based arts organization Artangel to mark the turn of the millennium, Longplayer is Finer’s response to the difficulty of representing and understanding time on a grander scale. At its core, Longplayer is a mathematically self-generating score—not random, but a set of principles that allow the score to continually create itself in a way that is aesthetically beautiful and musically unique. For 10 years, Longplayer has played through a computer system replicating the sound of Tibetan singing bowls; in 2009, it was performed live for the first time, for 24 hours on real singing bowls. It is not a computer-generated piece: As the hour-long segment “Shortplayer” goes to prove, it can be performed on any instruments, at any stage.

But more importantly, Longplayer is a set of concepts and questions: How to compose in a way immune to changes in the cultural perception of music, changes in technology, and changes in geography and politics? With the listening post and the performance of “Shortplayer,” Finer poses these questions to Pittsburgh’s audiences for the first time.

Jem Finer and the Musicians

Artist and composer Jem Finer is considered a unique voice in exploring issues combining science, technology, and philosophy such as “deep time” through sound installation, autonomous technology, and astronomical sculpture. He has been artist-in-residence at Oxford University’s department of Astrophysics and in 2005 won the PRS Foundation New Music Award for “Score for a Hole in the Ground.” As co-founder and co-writer with famed Irish-punk band The Pogues, Finer has helped create some of the most popular and influential British pop music of the past 25 years.

The musicians gathered to perform “Shortplayer” are some of Pittsburgh’s best-known avant-garde players. Music director David Bernabo has organized the group of horn players including Ben Opie (reeds), Roger Dannenberg (trumpet), Lou Stellute (saxophone), Mark Fromm (reeds), Brandon Masterman (reeds), and Roger Day (tuba).

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to present Celtic Thunder, a group of six Irish and Scottish male vocalists backed by a superb orchestra. Celtic Thunder will perform powerful ballads, popular hits and heartwarming songs of love and loss at the Benedum Center on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. This performance is part of the 2010-2011 Trust Presents series, sponsored by Cohen & Grigsby.

Celtic Thunder vocalists Irishmen Neil Byrne, Paul Byrom, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly and Damian McGinty, and Scotsman George Donaldson are known for their diverse musical styles and unique interpretations of classic songs such as "Standing on the Corner," "Still Haven't (Found What I'm Looking For)," "The Proclaimers," "My Life Without You" and "Hallejeuh" by Leonard Cohen.

The group's repertoire spans the Celtic spectrum of both Irish and Scottish, traditional and contemporary music. Prior to Byrne joining Celtic Thunder, The New York Times described the group as "a Fab Five peddling Celtic stylings;  steadfast George, sensitive Keith, bruising Paul, caddish Ryan and angelic Damian." In 2009, Celtic Thunder achieved BILLBOARD's Top World Music Artist and Top World Imprint.

Born into a musical family, Neil Byrne began learning the guitar and piano at age seven and by age 11, he was playing in his own band. Over the years, Neil's performing and recording career allowed him to perform throughout Ireland and with one of Ireland's most renowned jazz bass players, Frank Hess. While performing at a musical function in Ireland for Celtic Thunder producer Phil Coulter, Neil was subsequently invited to record backing vocals for the group's debut DVD, and subsequently play lead guitar player for the live show. Since then he has toured America and Canada extensively with Celtic Thunder and most recently has joined the group as 6th leading vocalist.

Dublin-born Paul Byrom began voice study at the early age of seven with opera performance and vocal instructor Dr. Veronica Dunne. By his teens, Paul was a professional singer and had recorded his first album. Paul has performed at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and has sung for Irish President Mary McAlleese and Emperor Akihito of Japan. Paul recently produced a solo Christmas album.

George Donaldson is a self-taught and accomplished musician. George plays guitar, flute, mandolin, bodhran, and banjo. George's love of Celtic music stems from his childhood in Glasgow, where his main influence was his late father Bernard, who had a love and appreciation of all kinds of live music played from the heart. He has recorded folk sessions for BBC Scotland and made appearances at Glasgow's own Celtic Connections and the Glasgow West End Festival.

Keith Harkin was born in County Derry, Ireland. From the age of four, Keith has been wowing audiences with his beautiful voice and musical virtuosity. Keith is an accomplished songwriter and guitarist and has played at the Tavistock Festival, UK as well as performed as the opening act for John Martyn, The Undertons and David Kitt.

Ryan Kelly comes from The Moy in County Tyrone, Ireland. In addition to his musical and acting career, Ryan holds a degree in Accounting from Queen's University, Belfast and a Graduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting. Ryan has been singing since the age of seven in various choirs and enjoys singing Irish Traditional and Folk Music. Ryan has performed with Westlife, Girls Aloud and Simply Red during the Children in Need Live Charity Concert. Other career highlights include winnder of the SCOR competition (2007) and second place in the nationwide BBC television music competition (2003).

Damian McGinty is currently the youngest member of the group, at 16 years old. He began singing at a young age in County Derry, Ireland and won his first music competition at the age of six. He has been involved with charity fundraising for his school and has produced a charity CD that raised over $2,000. In 2006, Damian won a singing competition to record his own track which led him to an invitation to audition with Celtic Thunder producers and an invitation to join the group as a soloist.

Katz Plaza every Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, JazzLive will move indoors to the Cabaret at Theater Square. Pittsburgh's 2008 Women of Achievement Honorees

Pittsburgh, PA - February 25, 2008

Twenty-three of Pittsburgh's most notable women will be acknowledged for their accomplishments and contributions to the City of Pittsburgh at the Third Annual Celebrate & Share, Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at The Rivers Club in downtown Pittsburgh.

District Attorney, Stephen A. Zappala, Jr. and wife Mary Zappala will Co-Chair the third annual event, which is traditionally held every March in observance of Women's History Month. Cribs for Kids® was founded in 1998 by Pittsburgh District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr., the late Mayor Bob O'Connor, the late Commander Gwen Elliott, and SIDS of PA Executive Director, Judith Bannon.

Celebrate & Share, an organization founded by Bonnie DiCarlo and JoAnn R. Forrester in 2002,
features the achievements of women, and raises funds for organizations which focus on the needs of women and children in the community. The Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast was established in March during Women's History Month to honor the women of Pittsburgh who contribute so much to our community. This year will feature a special tribute to Women of Achievement past and present in honor of the city of Pittsburgh's 250th Anniversary Celebration.

Cribs for Kids® will be the beneficiary of the proceeds of the 2008 Women of Achievement Breakfast. They were chosen due to their commitment to reducing the incidence of SIDS by supplying cribs for infants and educating parents about practicing safe sleep for their babies. Since the beginning of the campaign that recommends infants sleep on their backs - the "Back to Sleep" campaign - the incidence of SIDS has been cut in half.
