Brownsville Has a Dream

This Martin Luther King Day, January 21st, Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC) will host an open forum discussion and visioning workshop for the Brownsville community inspired by King’s spirit of service and activism.  The workshop will be held in 31 Market St., the former Odd Fellows Building, at 7:00pm and will ask community members to share their stories and visions for Brownsville’s future.

Americorps Service Members Sara Goots and Jamie Brackman will serve as discussion moderators.  The workshop will address a number of ways that community members can be involved in Brownsville’s recovery.

The workshop will be attended by representatives of local community organizations such as: Brownsville Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, Brownsville Rotary, The Historical Society, State Representative Pam Snyder’s office, Brownsville Area High School, River Towns Program, The National Road Heritage Corridor, as well as local churches and businesses.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.  Light refreshments will be served.  Parking will be available in the Snowdon Square Parking lot.  Please come join us in making Brownsville’s dreams into a reality.

In tribute to the legacy of Dr. King, Panera Bread is excited to invite high school students in the Greater Pittsburgh Area to help honor the legacy and work of one of this nation's most revered leaders, by creating a contemporary reflection and response to the provided prose.

"The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was,
"If I stop to help the man, what will happen to me?"
But...the Good Samaritan reversed the question:
"If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?"

Each respondent may present an essay, poem or spoken word lyric
that reflects on the following questions:
How do you feel about this quote?
What does this quote mean to you?
How can our nation use these words to honor
Dr. King and the life he lived?

All entries, including staff, must be
postmarked or emailed by Friday, January 11, 2013.
The top 10 finalists will be notified on January 18, 2013.
A celebratory breakfast will be hosted in honor of the finalists and their families on Saturday, January 26, 2013.
