SALUTING SERVICE features Rocky Bleier on May 21 when FPA of Pittsburgh honors Western Pennsylvania Veterans during Free Pre-Memorial Day Celebration

Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh presents First Class Patriot Achievement Award honoring vets making a difference in their communities at historic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum

PITTSBURGH, PA  (4/22/2013) – Giving back, fighting back and coming home will be celebrated at Saluting Service when a veteran who is making a difference in his or her Western Pennsylvania community is honored by the Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh with the First Class Patriot Achievement Award on Tuesday, May 21.

Rocky Bleier
Rocky Bleier, Vietnam veteran and four-time Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Champion running back, is the special guest at Saluting Service. He will congratulate award nominees and veterans of the U.S. service branches during the free pre-Memorial Day celebration for the community, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 7 pm, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA (15213).

Admission is free, but reservations are required at www.fpapittsburgh.org or call 412-653-1054.Remaining tickets will be provided at the door. An outdoor picnic and entertainment will be provided to all guests, 6-7 pm. Self-guided tours of Soldiers & Sailors’ Hall of Valor may be taken prior to the indoor program.
Bleier will provide inspirational words on attributes of courage, stamina and fighting back in the face of diversity as all veterans and military families in attendances are recognized.

Saluting Service showcases:
•         Honoring of all nominees for the First Class Patriot Achievement Award.
•         Awarding of the First Class Patriot Achievement Award to a nominee contributing to the community in which he/she lives in Western Pennsylvania.
•         Presentation of a $10,000 donation to Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard from FPA of Pittsburgh in honor of the top award winner.
•         Adam Brock, American Idol 2012 semi-finalist and Washington, PA, native, featured vocalist in the 20-piece Trinity Jazz Orchestra’s “God and Country,” a patriotic and inspirational set.
The First Class Patriot Achievement Award was created by Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh to honor past and/or present community service by veterans of any U.S. military branch, including reservists and National Guard, who reside in Western Pennsylvania. Nominations were solicited throughout 27 counties and the awardee will be announced prior to the event.

Bio for Rocky Bleier

Seriously wounded during his active duty with the U.S. Army in Vietnam during 1969, Rocky Bleier was decorated with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his courageous service. Bleier, a Notre Dame business graduate, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968, then by the U.S. Army by the end of that year. Upon returning from service, Bleier fought back through rehabilitation and perseverance to gain a spot on the Steeler active roster by 1972. During his NFL career, the running back became a four-time Super Bowl champion with the Steelers before retiring in 1980. Founder of Rocky Bleier, Inc., the popular inspirational speaker is the author of Fighting Back, a bestseller inspiring an ABC movie-of-the-week.  Bleier supports Veteran causes and events in the Pittsburgh region and beyond.

Call for Nominations for First Class Patriot Achievement Award honoring Veterans making a difference in their Communities Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh to present award at Saluting Service on May 22

PITTSBURGH, PA (2/29/2012) -- Nominations are being accepted for the Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh’s First Class Patriot Achievement Award to honor a veteran who is making a difference through community service. FPA of Pittsburgh will present the Award to the recipient at Saluting Service on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, Pittsburgh.

A $10,000 donation to Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania will be made by FPA of Pittsburgh in honor of the top award winner. All nominees and veterans attending will be recognized at Saluting Service, which will be open to the public at no charge.

The First Class Patriot Achievement Award from Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh honors past and/or present community service by veterans of any US military branch, including reservists and National Guard, who reside in Western Pennsylvania. Nominations are now being accepted online at www.fpapittsburgh.org or by requesting a form at 412-653-1054. FPA of Pittsburgh is also on Facebook.

Nominations are due with postmark by/on Fri., April 13 for postal mail submissions, or by midnight on
Sun., April 15 by e-mailed entries.

The Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh’s Saluting Service will feature outdoor picnic-style refreshments and entertainment, 6-7 pm, and an indoor program, 7-9 pm on May 22. In addition to music and special guests, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Barry Bridger, a highly-decorated, 22-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, will share his inspirational story. Lt. Col. Bridger, who flew more than 70 combat missions over North Vietnam, survived a six-year imprisonment in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” at the same time as Sen. John McCain.

The historic Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum is located at 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA (15213). Admission is free, but reservations are required at www.fpapittsburgh.org. Tickets will be provided at the door, if seating is available.
